Why does the Receptionist need to ask what's wrong with me?

Our receptionists are to here to help you get to the right service.

Please don't be offended if they ask what the problem is when you call to make an appointment.

Reception staff, like all members of our team, are bound by patient confidentiality.

Urgent (Same Day) Appointments

Please inform the receptionist if you feel you need to be seen urgently and we will try to accommodate you.

For urgent appointments and home visits you may not be able to see the doctor of your choice.

Please also refer to our 'Urgent Problems and Out of Hours' page for information.

Extended Access Appointments

Pre-bookable evening and weekend appointments with a local GP are available from 6pm-8pm Monday-Friday, 8am-4pm Saturdays and Sundays 10-2pm at Bath Street Health and Wellbeing Centre. Easily accessible, the Health and Wellbeing Centre is in the town centre and has links to public transport on the town’s main bus routes.

To access an out of hours appointment please call your own GP who will arrange the appointment for you. Please be aware that you will need to consent to share your medical record with the service.

Where are Out of Hours and Extended Access appointments held?

Bath Street Health and Wellbeing Centre, Legh Street, Warrington, WA1 1UG

General Information

In order to meet high demand and improve access to a GP a large number of appointments are now available on a book on the day basis each day, and a number of routine appointments are available to book in advance.

You are able to ring and speak to a receptionist when our telephone lines are open. When the lines are closed, the surgery does have an answerphone on at these times giving details of a number to ring in the case of emergency only.

In order to improve access a number of changes have been made to the service. The practice has a number of standards that it wishes to aspire to and in order to do this the practice has had to change its appointment system accordingly.

Pre-Bookable appointments

These are appointments that you can book up to 2 weeks in advance.

Book on the day appointments

When all appointments for the day have been taken, for an urgent appointment, you may be asked to speak to a nurse or a GP who can arrange an urgent appointment the same day if needed. Please note the nurse or GP may need to ring you back and will need a contact number.

Telephone Advice & Appointments

Telephone Advice

Telephone Advice may include queries about a prescription, a test result, a hospital appointment, a referral, a form that needs to be completed or advice about a minor ailment. Please call and ask the receptionist who will be able to help you.

Telephone Consultations with your Doctor

You may feel you could benefit from telephone advice from a nurse or a GP rather than take up an appointment. If this is the case, just ring and explain to the receptionist that you would like some advice. Please note that the nurse or GP may need to ring you back if they are not available. Or you may wish to speak to a nurse or a GP for the following:

  • If you have seen the doctor or nurse recently and wish to discuss persistent symptoms.
  • If you have been asked to consider further intervention I.e. referral to another health care professional.

It may be that after telephone advice the GP or nurse may recommend that you make an appointment.

Advice is also available from the NHS 111 service by calling 111 from your landline or mobile phone.

Practice Nurses

Our practices nurses offer a range of services. For further information see the nursing section of our Clinics and Services page.

How can you help us?

It would help the appointments system enormously if when booked appointments are no longer required that they are cancelled. The practice unfortunately suffers a high number of booked appointments each week which patients do not attend and fail to cancel. If cancelled, these appointments could have been made available to other patients needing to be seen.

It is always our intention to offer as much patient choice as possible for our patients when booking an appointment.

Chaperones

If you anticipate that you may require an examination by the Doctor and feel that you would like a chaperone to be present, please make reception aware at the time of booking your appointment so that this can be arranged. Alternatively bring along a member of your family or friend to your appointment.

Cancelling an Appointment

If you are unable to attend for your appointment please tell us in good time so that we are able to offer another patient the use of that appointment.

You can use one of the following methods:

  1. Cancel Online using SystmOnline:
Cancel Your Appointment online using SystmOnline.
  2. Cancel Online:
Cancel Online using this alternative method (no login required).
  3. By Telephone:
Please call us on 01925 303100.
  4. In Person: Call into your surgery and let the receptionist know in person.

We can offer your appointment to someone else and therefore help to reduce waiting times.

As part of our commitment to all our patients we monitor the efficient use of appointments. If a patient regularly fails to attend a booked appointment, the practice reserves the right to remove them and their family from the practice list.
